New Study Finds More Than Half of U.S. Pet Parents Skip or Decline Needed Veterinary Care

A recent study by PetSmart Charities and Gallup reveals that over half (52%) of U.S. pet parents have skipped or declined necessary veterinary care for their pets. The primary reason cited is financial constraints, with 71% of those who forwent care stating they couldn't afford it or didn't believe the recommended care was worth the cost. This issue spans across income levels, with a significant number of higher-earning households also reporting they’ve skipped veterinary care due to affordability concerns.
The consequences are significant: 14% of pet parents who skipped care reported their pet's condition worsened or resulted in death. Additionally, 30% know someone who lost a pet because they couldn't afford necessary care.
The study also highlights a lack of alternative care options. Among those who declined care due to cost, 73% said their veterinarian did not offer a more affordable treatment option. Payment plans are underutilized, with less than 25% of pet parents recalling being offered one. Many pet parents expressed interest in alternatives like community clinics (38%), home visits (38%), or telemedicine (37%) to help receive care for their pets.
